(SportsNetwork.com) - The Cincinnati Bengals have become experts at offensive storm-weathering. Their run game has collectively managed only 3.1 yards per carry over the last two games, with leading rusher Giovani Bernard gaining just 62 yards on 23 attempts. Meanwhile, No. 1 wide receiver A.J. Green has missed three consecutive games - and is questionable this week - with a toe injury. His prospects for Sunday against Jacksonville will depend on how much practice work he can handle. But amid the adversity, some jewels have been uncovered. The Bengals have seen No. 2 man Mohamed Sanu pick up the aerial slack in Greens absence, catching 18 balls for 299 yards while serving as quarterback Andy Daltons main target. He caught five passes for 125 yards last week against Baltimore, in a 27-24 win that ended 0-2-1 streak since a Week 4 bye. Mos been playing great, Dalton said. I have a lot of confidence in him, and he has a lot of confidence in himself that hes going to make plays. Dalton hasnt had a touchdown pass since the 37-37 tie with Carolina in Week 6, but hes got a chance to have both Sanu and Green in the lineup together against the Jaguars for the first time since Oct. 5. Its a prospect thats got Sanu sounding confident. Now its going to be that theyre going to have to play us straight-up, he said. They cant double-cover any one of us. Theyre going to have to play man-to-man. Thats what we want. It doesnt help Jacksonvilles cause that starting cornerback Alan Ball wont be available after he was placed on season-ending injured reserve. The Jaguars signed Tommie Campbell, who played 37 games with Tennessee from 2011 to 2013, as a roster-filler. Linebacker Paul Posluszny was lost for the season with a torn chest muscle a week earlier, and defensive end Andre Branch is out for several weeks with a groin injury. Jacksonville is winless in its last five road games with an average deficit of more than 17 points, while Cincinnati is 12-0-1 in its last 13 regular-season games at Paul Brown Stadium. We have to come back and truly attack these things, Jaguars coach Gus Bradley said, because we cant continue in this fashion. The Jaguars have scored 14.8 points per game through seven games - worst in the NFL - while their weekly average of 306.6 yards per week is better than just two teams, winless Oakland and one-win Tampa Bay. Theyve turned the ball over 18 times to tie the one-win New York Jets for the leagues worst mark and the resulting minus-10 turnover differential is 31st among 32 teams. Cincinnati is plus-5 in that statistic, tied for sixth in the league. The quarterbacking era heralded by first-round rookie Blake Bortles has been more miss than hit, with the youngster tossing 12 interceptions in five-plus games since he took over for veteran Chad Henne. Two of the interceptions - and a lost fumble - came in a 27-13 defeat last week against Miami. Four of the interceptions have been brought back for touchdowns. Im not going to say Im mad at myself, because thats not really going to help anything, Bortles said. Nobody cares, and its not going to help me do anything. Youve just got to learn from it. Youve got to go figure it out, start watching film and find out what you can do to try to be better. On the plus side, Bortles may have a new gem in his arsenal, too. Former University of Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson has run for 127 and 108 yards in his last two games, catapulting him to the top spot among Jacksonvilles rushers in 2014 and becoming the first Jaguar to run for 100- plus in two straight games since Maurice Jones-Drew three years ago. Its nice to see the running game getting better, guard Brandon Linder said. Hes a talented athlete and a great team player. He brings it on every play and is very confident in the way he runs. Thats Denard. He makes things happen. WHAT TO WATCH FOR Two if by Air Presuming Green finds his way to the field on Sunday, itll create a matchup for he and red-hot teammate Sanu against the Jaguars cornerback tandem - minus the injured Ball - of Demetrius McCray and Dwayne Gratz. Their most recent test came last week against Miami, whose top threat, Mike Wallace, was limited to two catches and no other target had more than three. A Developing Situation The Jaguars drafted Robinson as a wide receiver after he was a quarterback with the Wolverines, but hes clearly found a niche as a runner. Cincinnati hasnt exactly been a collective run-stopping machine either, allowing at least 107 yards on the ground for five straight games after its first two foes in 2014 - Baltimore and Atlanta - accounted for 94 and 97, respectively. OVERALL ANALYSIS Robinsons a nice little story and the Bengals havent reached the level theyd presumably attained after going 3-0 in the seasons early stages, but its simply hard to imagine the Jaguars winning here. They dont travel well, they dont score much and their defense is inconveniently beaten up on the way to a visit to face a team thats got a number of potential difference-makers on offense. The Baseball Writers Association of American will close out its postseason awards slate when it names both the AL and NL MVP. Cabrera was an easy winner last year after he became the first player since Bostons Carl Yastrzemski in 1967 to win a Triple Crown. He may have fallen short of becoming the first player to accomplish that in back-to-back seasons, but it was through no fault of his own, as Cabrera had a better statistical campaign than he did a year ago. He hit a career-high .348 to become the first player in more than two decades to win three straight AL batting titles. His 44 home runs were second to the 53 by Baltimores Chris Davis, and he finished second in RBI, one behind Davis 138. Nobody in the league had more go-ahead RBI than Cabreras 37. Last year, Cabrera batted .330 last year with 44 homers and 139 RBI. Still, he saw a jump across the board in other statistical categories, including slugging percentage (.636) and on-base percentage (.442). Plus his 1.078 OPS not only led the majors, it was 74 points ahead of his nearest competitor. Not to mention he did all that in 13 fewer games than he did in 2012, as he played the final month of the season with an abdominal injury that eventually required surgery once the Tigers were eliminated from the postseason. Cabreras other two finalists are Davis and Los Angeles Angels superstar Mike Trout. Trout, of course, finished second to Cabrera last year and may suffer a similar fate on Thursday, despite another terrific season for the underachieving Angels. The 22-year-old outfielder hit .323 with 97 RBI and 27 home runs with 33 stolen bases, while playing a nearly flawless outfield. Quite simply, his combination of speed, power and defense was matched by nobody. Trout led the AL in runs (109) and walks (110), set a franchise record for on- base percentage (.432) and ranked second in the AL with 75 extra-base hits, all while adding 27 homers, 97 RBIs and -- heres where he distances himself from the field -- 33 steals. If advanced statistics are your thing, Trout had a 10.4 fWAAR (Fangraphs Wins Above Replacement) to lead the majors, topping the 10 fWAR he had last season.ddddddddddddThere have only been a small handful of players to post back-to-back double- digit seasons in that category and they include Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Rogers Hornsby, Ted Williams, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays and Barry Bonds. And none of them accomplished that in his first two seasons. Enough said. Over in the National League, Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen appears to be the frontrunner after helping his team get back to the postseason for the first time since 1992. Although McCutchen was only hitting .238 at the start of May, the three-time All-Star ended the year hitting .317 with 21 home runs, 84 RBI, 27 stolen bases, with a .404 on-base percentage and a .508 slugging percentage in 157 games. He became just the fourth major league center fielder since 1947 to have consecutive seasons of hitting .300 with a .400 slugging percentage and .500 on-base-plus-slugging percentage, joining Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays and Ken Griffey Jr. Should he win, McCutchens 84 RBI would be the fewest of any winner of this award since Kirk Gibson knocked in 76 in 1988. McCuthchens other finalists are Arizona first baseman Paul Goldschmidt and St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina. Goldschmidt, who is trying to become the first Arizona player to win this award, was tied with Pittsburghs Pedro Alvarez for the NL lead with 36 home runs and topped the league with 125 RBI and a .551 slugging percentage. Hes also no slouch in the field and was recently rewarded with his first Gold Glove award and he won the Hank Aaron Award as the top hitter in the NL. Molina, meanwhile, set a franchise record for doubles by a catcher (44) and ranked fourth in the NL with a .319 batting average and sixth with his .373 average with runners in scoring position. He ranked in the NLs top seven in multi-hit games (50), three-hit games (14) and four-hit games (four) despite missing time due to a knee injury He also established season-best marks in RBI (80), runs (68), hits (161), go- ahead RBIs (19) and game-winning RBIs (10). Not to mention, hes also the best defensive catcher in baseball and recently won his sixth straight Gold Glove Award.
